Durham police search for bank robber

Durham, N.C. — Durham police looked Monday for a man who robbed the SunTrust Bank on Corcoran Street about 9:30 a.m..

Police described the suspect as black and middle-aged with a salt-and-pepper beard and wearing a black-and-white plaid jacket and a gray hoodie.

He entered the bank around 9:30 a.m., stood in line and then handed a teller a note demanding money, police said.

He did not use a weapon, and no one was injured. He got away with an undisclosed sum of money.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator C.C. Green at 919-560-4406 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.

A hoodie is a sweatshirt with a hood attached. The hood is on in the photo, over a hat, which I guess was supposed to hide his face, but did a poor job.

Why is the word "downtown" not in the story as of 12:46 pm 12/15? Because the owners of the American Tobacco campus, Durham Bulls, Diamond View, etc. don't want give downtown Durham (and their properties by extension) a bad image.

For those who don't know, this bank is in the Sun Trust buliding, the highlight of the downtown Durham skyline. But it becomes the "Corcoran Street bank" when it gets robbed.

Should we stop putting downtown in the list of "safe" parts of the Bull City? Was it ever there?
