Durham police are expected to finish an investigation this week into whether officers posted derogatory remarks about President-elect Barack Obama on their Facebook pages, City Manager Tom Bonfield said.

Bonfield said he had not seen a report on the investigation. He said he expected Police Chief Jose Lopez to release that report.

Bonfield said he expects the officers' comments, posted on the social networking site, to be made public.

The president of the Durham chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has asked that the officers' comments be made public and that the department discipline any officers found to be involved.

The term derogatory could mean just about anything.. if they did not incite or advocate violence against him or any other individual then it is likely that they broke no law. And, if they are punished then the department is violating their Constitutional right to equal protection under the law and should be sanctioned. Police Officers can not legally be held to any standard other than the one that society has determined and supported by legislation.

Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

hereandnow99.("Should speech that incites hate and violence be protected? I mean, stupid talk is one thing that we probably all do at one time or other, but what about serious "hate and death" instigators?...that wear a badge. A mental image of the Klan aligning with back woods sheriffs suddenly comes to mind." )

So it was alright for all those people who said "Kill Bush" over the past eight years though right? I dare you to Google and see how many hits come up for "Kill Bush" and let me know where all your outrage was then! Just because a man has a different color does not make saying the same things worse. People need to make up their minds about free speech being equal. I have no idea why in a "Free Speech" Tunnel saying Kill Bush is less worse than Kill Obama. I have no idea what this officer said but the hypocrisy is out of control now.

68_polars, do we know what they allegedly said? And should threatening to "kill a (racial slur)" be protected speech?... from people who have the knowledge & resources to do so without repercussion? Or, what if they wanted to maim, jail and hang all Christians, white people or other majority group? Would that be ok to say?

You've got to be really careful what you say if it offends a liberal, they tout freedom of speech until they here something they disagree with.
