LizaB...where are THE FACTS reported. You "know" these two people, that is great, but people are commenting on the "facts" as semi-reported by WRAL. Unfortunately I see way too many people out walking/jogging at night on the wrong side of the road wearing dark clothes. Nowhere in the report does it say anything about the driver clearing his windshield or what they were wearing. All is says is that they were on the same side of the road as the car. If he hit them head on they should have seen it coming and moved. If he hit them from behind they were on the wrong side of the road or the driver was. Driver wasn't charged so I would have to assume they were on the wrong side of the road.

This is so sad...my heart goes out to both of these women.

I am disturbed that so many people automatically think these women are at fault. I know Barbara Busse and know of the situation. I know she was wearing all white including a white hat and was carrying a flashlight that night- NOT the all dark which as wrongly reported. The driver, apparently, was cleaning his windshield and hit them as the water was spraying out of his wipers. He didn't even notice them until he saw the impact to his windshield. Barbara is in bad condition with multiple broken bones and is in intensive care. Her friend Mona has a broken pelvis. I feel for the man who hit them because he will continue to remember this incident, but please don't dismiss his responsibility. These women will be in pain,rehabilitation and out of work for months. His insurance to cover their medical costs.

Ultimately, you have to weigh your perception of a pedestrian's right of way vs a 3000+ lb vehicle going 25+ mph. Like most topics discussed here, this involves common sense. Or in this case, a certain lack thereof.

This is sad. I hate to hear about things like this, but where are folk's common sense....or the "rules" of the road, as mentioned below? Just because you are in the road doesn't mean drivers will see you, or yield to you... It is tragic that things like this happen, what is more tragic is the reason why......this didn't have to happen.
