Head-on wreck injures teen in Johnston

Benson, N.C. — A head-on collision injured a teenager Friday evening at an intersection where another wreck killed a teenager earlier this month.

The wreck happened along U.S. Highway 50, at Zacks Mill Road in Benson, at 7:09, state troopers said. The teenager, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital.

More details about the wreck have not been released.

Steven "Drew" Smith, 17, died when his best friend, Dennis Dewitt, 17, drove off Zacks Mill Road, near U.S. 50, on Nov. 1. Troopers said Dewitt was driving at an unsafe speed.

State, county and school officials have talked about ways to lower the number of auto-related death of teens and young adults in Johnston County. Since 2006, nearly 30 teens have died in wrecks in the county.
