Van, Knightdale police car involved in wreck

A Knightdale police officer was involved in a wreck at Knightdale Boulevard and Wide Waters Parkway Saturday evening, the state Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said the officer, whose name was not released, had his lights and siren on when he approached the intersection on Wide Water around 6 p.m. The officer drove through a red light and was hit by a van traveling west on Knightdale Boulevard.

A passenger in the van was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Rex Hospital.

Troopers found that both drivers were at fault. The officer ran a red light, and although the van driver had a green light, he did not yield to the officer’s siren and lights.

The trooper who responded to the wreck said he told the officer and driver that he could charge both of them or neither one. They chose neither.
