Durham police probe allegations of officer misconduct

e-mail print friendly

The Durham Police Department has launched an internal investigation into alleged misconduct by police officers on a social networking Web site, officials said Wednesday.

Deputy Police Chief B.J. Council said the misconduct was racial in nature, but declined to say how many officers were under investigation or whether any of them had been taken off active duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

The investigation began last week after other departmental employees expressed concerns, Council said.

Actually it's called a code of conduct policy. It pretty much states that an officer is held to a higher standard. That's why when the police get accused of things it makes the news and usually end up loosing their jobs. You accept the oath, then you accept the responsibility.

I suppose the real issue is... if its on a public site like facebook and its thier personal page.. no official ties to the department.. then there is no grounds for any discipline.. last I checked .. this is America.. and there is freedom of expression.. even if you find it offensive.. what the individual(s) do for a living is totally irrelevant.. and if they are disciplined they should file a civil rights suit against the City...

This article is chocked full of information!

From the N&O:

"Police Chief Jose L. Lopez Sr. said "It wasn't a racial slur, but we're still investigating it."

So which is it? Racial or not?
