Durham police said Tuesday that they had charged Alton Dewayne “Popeye” Sanders, whom they already had in custody, with the Oct. 14 murder of a man in the 1300 block of Nnorth Hyde Park Avenue.

Sanders was arrested in October on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling and discharging a firearm within the city limits for a shooting in August on Hoover Road.

Police believe he shot a man in the leg and buttocks while driving by 1126 S. Hoover Road at 11:50 p.m. on Aug. 4. That victim survived.

The murder charge stems from the shooting of Lamont Monty Brandon Jr., 19. Brandon was shot in the chest and later died of his wounds at Duke University Hospital.

It baffles me that our society is so soft on crime. When it comes to theft and violent crime, this is the one thing I don't mind my tax dollars going to!!

The greatest thing Obama could do, as President, would be to change the lives of his own race. That would do more to secure America than almost ANY President in history.

68_polara... You win the prize! Finally a post that actually hit the nail on the head.

I do disagree with you slightly about problems with the police department. The problem is simply Liberal Judges who allow defense attorneys to get away with almost any defense. And when they do convict, the Liberal Judges don't have the cahunas to give a stiff sentence. Then there's the Liberal Parole Board members who let these punks back out on the street before they have served their time. If these problems were corrected, you wouldn't need as many police to re-arrest these punks multiple times. But I totally stand by my previous comments. Inner-city Durham has a much too high of a crime rate considering the population.

In fact after the resent elections I'm gravely concerned for the rest of the country as well.

DeathRow-IFeelYourPain-NOT, Not everyone in durham commits crimes the reality is that it's only a number of violent repeat offending felons that are doing most of the murders and that's why so often you read that those arrested are already in custody and they seem to so often already have mug shots of those they are looking for. The problem is this, the criminal justice system in Durham is a joke the officers are under paid so the department goes under staffed, good officers leave for better jobs else where. Those who stay respond to many calls, property crimes pretty much go uninvestigated. Then we have the liberal Durham judges that ensure that the Durham county court house is just a revolving door for the repeat violent offenders. Durham's priorities are with throwing public money at redevelopment and ball parks not public safety. Unfortunately however I can't imagine this changing anytime soon because I don't see Durham electing much needed conservative leadership.
