Fayetteville police officer Michael Yount, injured in assault

A Fayetteville police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing after he shot a burglary suspect in the leg.

Officer Michael Yount was responding to a reported burglary in June when three men attacked him, police said. The men also kicked and punched Yount's K-9, Tricky, police said.

Yount eventually fired a shot and struck one of the men in the leg, police said.

The Cumberland County District Attorney's Office ruled that Yount's actions were justified.

Brothers Danny Corey Williams, 19, and Tremayne Quartez Williams, 21, both of 2103 Woodbine Ave., were charged with assault on a government official, injury to personal property and assault on a police K-9. A 15-year-old also was charged in the case.

Seemingly, officers are not trained to shoot to wound. Using your firearm is deadley force, and it is used to stop deadly force (knife, bat, etc). As a former one, I can tell you he was not aiming for the leg, he was fighting for his life and just happened to hit him in the leg.

Why would shooting someone in the leg be regarded as a mistake and this officer needing training? He got the same results that he would have had by killing this young man. With the exception of living with killing another human being. Even if these people had no regard for him, he has to deal with himself. More officers should shoot to stop when the assailants do not have guns, unstead of shooting to kill, and ending up going to jail themselves for terrible mistakes or being sued and lives ruined. You people are devious at best.....

"I agree with Cookie but maybe they need to send him back through firearms training "the leg?""

Ignorant, party of one............Ignorant........

Where he hit has nothing to do with firearms training. The officer was being attacked, you take what you can get. He scored a hit in a fight for his life. I say that's just fine to me.

I agree with Cookie but maybe they need to send him back through firearms training "the leg?"
