A Johnston County teenager was charged Sunday in connection with a crash that killed his friend.

Steven "Drew" Smith, 17, and Dennis Dewitt, also 17, were on their way to a turkey shoot Friday night when Dewitt's truck drove off Zacks Mill Road, near N.C. Highway 50.

Smith died at the scene. Emergency medical crews took Dewitt to WakeMed, where he was treated and released.

Dewitt was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and exceeding a safe speed, the state Highway Patrol said.

momof3 - just fyi, "alive at 25" is a JOKE!! it's nothing more than a TICKET GENERATOR for the county - Education is the key, and drivers Ed stinks in this county - why not put the blame squarely where it lies? Driving is a PRIVLEDGE not a "right" and it should be tougher to get a drivers license... try adding some defensive driving and or actual driving training for our children. my daughter was instructed by the same teachers who taught these kids their drivers ed - and drove for about 1 hour - no highway or vehicle control what so ever, no defensive driving or instruction on what to do in the event of a minor mishap to keep it from getting worse. I had to take my daughter out and basically teach her how to drive safely. I just happened to be able to teach her CEVO and EVOC(enmergency vehicle operators courses) Oh, and just fyi - I see darned near every trauma that happens in JOCO - since I work both in the ER and w/ EMS - I know what happens - do you?

I can't imagine losing a child for any reason. Prayers are with all of you!

Praying for both families. So very tragic.....half a mile from home....just can not imagine having to go through losing a child...! God be with these families in their time of need.

sad... guess the county isn't doing enough to stop teen driving related deaths... maybe we should try DRIVERS EDUCATION... oh wait, all the federal funding was cut by the Reagan administration... gee thanks GOP

You are trying to turn this tragic event into a political arena - shame on you. We know the family and my kids attend West Johnston High School and are friends with Drew. West has lost 5 students to motor vehicle accidents since 2006. They all have been extremely hard. You should show sympathy towards the two families and all those who knew and loved Drew - not attempt to express your political views. Johnston County is offering Alive at 25 to teen drivers in an attempt to turn this horrible trend and yes, every teen still has to take Driver's ed to get their license.

Wembley, are you nuts? Parental responsibility? What will you say next, that we should be responsible for our own actions? With lots of pun intended. :P
