Benson, N.C. — A Johnston County teenager was charged Sunday in connection with a crash that killed his friend.
Steven "Drew" Smith, 17, and Dennis Dewitt, also 17, were on their way to a turkey shoot Friday night when Dewitt's truck drove off Zacks Mill Road, near N.C. Highway 50.
Smith died at the scene. Emergency medical crews took Dewitt to WakeMed, where he was treated and released.
Dewitt was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and exceeding a safe speed, the state Highway Patrol said.

You are trying to turn this tragic event into a political arena - shame on you. We know the family and my kids attend West Johnston High School and are friends with Drew. West has lost 5 students to motor vehicle accidents since 2006. They all have been extremely hard. You should show sympathy towards the two families and all those who knew and loved Drew - not attempt to express your political views. Johnston County is offering Alive at 25 to teen drivers in an attempt to turn this horrible trend and yes, every teen still has to take Driver's ed to get their license.
