A Chapel Hill Transit bus struck a pedestrian near the campus of the University of North Carolina late Monday afternoon.

Campus and town police responded to the wreck at Mason Farm Road and South Columbia Street around 4:15 p.m.

The pedestrian, whose identity was withheld, was being treated at UNC Hospitals that night, police said.

Police did not release more details on the cause of the collision and the condition of the victim.

Was just reading an article about pedestrian deaths in NYC (in the NY Times) and this statement struck me as very appropriate to this discussion:

"People tend to confuse the legal sense in which drivers are required to yield to pedestrians with the practical ability to stop a moving vehicle quickly enough to avoid hitting someone who walks in front of it."

The bottom line... No one should ASSUME anything! That's the problem with Chapel Hill! The pedestrians assume all traffic will stop for them and the traffic assumes that there won't be any pedestrians jumping out from in between the other cars. Then all of a sudden... Here we are again.

People think buses can stop on a dime. Buses drive like they believe they can stop that fast.

The other problem, one that no one can really control is early morning commutes coming on to Manning from Columbus, or on to Mason Farm from Columbus. When the sunlight hits you just right, the drivers can't see anything. What good do those pedestrian crosswalks do then? I creep along, but people still jump out in front of me.

She died. I knew that she had when it happened. God bless her family. God bless the bus driver too.

I dont know. I didnt see anything. I was reading. It had been a long day. I was just trying to get to my car so that I could go home. Right after the bus made the left turn, was when the accident happened. I thought that we had rear-ended a car. (That's what it sounded and felt like.) Everyone was just silent for a couple of minutes in shock. Especialy the driver. I do not know that anyone was at "fault". No one meant for it to happen of course. I just can't get it out of my head.

Beaver, who do you think was at fault?
