Elderly couple dies in I-40 wreck

e-mail print friendly

An elderly couple from Durham died when their car ran off the side of Interstate 40 East, south of Benson Friday afternoon, the state Highway Patrol said.

Thomas Charles Key, 78, was driving when his vehicle ran off the right side of the highway, near mile marker 334, shortly after 3 p.m., troopers said. The car went down an embankment and flipped over.

Key and his 73-year-old wife, Shirley Creech, both died in the wreck.

They were the only people in the car and were wearing their seatbelts, troopers said.

Authorities have not released the cause of the wreck.

What a nice comment from Mr. Spencer.

This is a sad story. The accident was not too far from my house. Our thoughts and prayers are also with this family.

I, along with 2 other officers from Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department, arrived at this accident as it was happening. I spent several minutes in the car with both victims. I talked to Mrs Creech as she was being extricated. There was nothing I could do for Mr Key. I knew from my experience that Mrs Creech was in very critical condition. If someone in the family reads this, just know that we tried out best. I have thought about this accident every day since it happened. Just know that your family has been in the thoughts and prayers of my family and extend our deepest sypathies for your losses.

Rick Spencer Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department

Thoughts and Prayers are with the family of these people.
