Smith Elementary and Brentwood Elementary will get magnet programs, the Wake County school board decided Tuesday.

The schools, both in Raleigh and on traditional calendars, will begin accepting applications in February 2009.

The Brentwood Elementary will implement an engineering magnet theme, while Smith Elementary will have an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program.

The school board also decided to phase out the magnet program at Daniels Middle School in Raleigh.

Broughton High School will retain its magnet status, officials decided. Concerns about the program had been raised after Daniels lost its magnet status earlier this month.

It's funny how some people equate rich with white and poor with minority. Oh, and btw, a lot of middle-class kids qualify for reduced lunches.

The program at Brentwood is designed to bring rich white kids into a combat zone. This I agree with.

Brentwood's neighborhood is almost as dangerous as the neighborhood around the magnet schools, Hunter and Powell. This I disagree with. It's the apartments that all the illegals live in. The people in houses are decent..and hardworking people.

Thirty (30) percent of the Broughton students get free or reduced price lunches. Although perhaps not as high as WCPSS would like, this is higher than the Wake County average.

Its pretty sad when a school, with a specialty in a higher education course, still can't get decent kids to come. I know of parents, that want the higher education, but aren't willing to trade their child's welfare for a chance at a higher level education. If my children qualified, I would NOT send them to a magnet school. As I understand it, they also try to balance out the "free lunch" children with the "paying lunch" children. All of this basically tells me they are balancing out the good kids with the bad. I don't want ANY part of it.

Hopefully the engineering magnet program helps them build a bullet proof vest and an Armour plated car for commuting to school in.
