Highway Patrol to fight order to reinstate fired K-9 trooper

The state Highway Patrol decided Monday to appeal an order to reinstate a trooper fired for roughly treating his K-9 partner.

Crime Control and Public Safety Secretary Bryan Beatty made the decision after consulting with the state Attorney General's Office. The appeal will go to state Superior Court.

On Friday, the State Personnel Commission said that Charles Jones should get back his job.

The commission found that the Highway Patrol did not have "just cause to dismiss for unacceptable personal conduct;" however, it did find "sufficient cause for discipline for unsatisfactory job performance," Beatty said.

Jones was fired in September 2007 after another trooper turned over two 15-second video clips of Jones suspending his dog, Ricoh, from a railing and kicking the dog repeatedly to force it to release a chew toy.

Isn't North Carolina a right to work state? So why should the Highway Patrol have to take him back? Lord knows, most of the public doesn't want him back.

I can't believe this mean man got his job back. The footage of him abusing that dog is horrible and needs to be fired permanently.

I hope that if this trooper is somehow re-instated, instead of being jailed like he should be, that he is "trained" in the same way he "trained" his dog. The fact that this person is not behind bars is shameful.

It looks like the State Troopers don't want him back.

Keep in mind that working K9's are tools in law enforcement, just the same as any other tool they use. Or any tool you would use in your job. If you intentionally misuse it, such as say throwing your computer down a flight of stairs you should be fired. I hate to compare the two types of tools. But the officer needs to go flip burgers or something he would be good at hitting or kicking
