Johnston officials seek ways to cut teen driving deaths

e-mail print friendly

A Johnston County commissioner will head an effort to find ways to reduce the high rate of teen traffic fatalities in the county, officials said Wednesday.

Commissioner Tony Braswell will organize a forum of elected officials, law enforcement officials, school representatives, students, parents, state Department of Transportation officials, fire department members, emergency services providers and the general public to discuss various strategies and how best to implement them.

Johnston County led the state last year with 11 teen traffic fatalities.

“This is a serious matter, and we must do something. We need everyone’s help to do this,” Braswell said in a statement.

The date, time and location of the forum haven't been set.

Pray for God to keep them safe

Exactly right jr1. I see teenagers at the high school where I teach do this. They get speeding tickets or tickets for careless and reckless driving, their parents get a lawyer and the charges are reduced or dismissed. The kids learn the lesson that as long as their parents have money, they can do as they please.

there is nothing u can teach kids to keep them from acting a fool in a car......we need parents and courts to do their jobs...as a parent i punish my kids when they do wrong...as a cop i've arrested a 17 yoa for doing 117 mph on a 2 lane road, that was years ago and to this day have never been to court on it.....enough said....

(SAYITTOMYFACE:Stop giving drivers licenses to teens. Let them wait till they are 18)

Isn't an 18 yr. old a teen? Just give them a ticket and make it stick in court. When their parents insurance rates skyrocket then something might get done about the "speeding" deaths.

Sometimes our government just has to realize it can't do everything. If the problem is lack of experience and you make them wait, then common sense says the fatality rate will just go up in the next higher age bracket. All I expect our government to do is give a thorough driving test for teens and enforce the laws. It would be wrong to take away all teens' right to drive because of a few people that ignore the laws. Not to mention the economic impact.
