Fayetteville, N.C. — A state Medical Examiner's report confirms that a Fayetteville-area man was murdered, Cumberland County authorities announced Tuesday.
Detectives were trying to determine who killed Clarence Bauer, 79, of 348 Star Lane. A friend found Bauer dead in the home Saturday after not being able to reach him.
Authorities have not disclosed how he died. Bauer’s 2004 white Ford Focus is missing, officials said.
Detectives said they have spoken with a man they wanted to question in connection with the killing.
Charles Michael Gainey II, 34, of Fayetteville, surrendered to law enforcement officials for questioning, and detectives later released him.
Authorities have not disclosed any other details about the case.
Anyone with information regarding Bauer's death is asked to call the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 910-323-1500.
