Mebane, N.C. — Authorities on Monday were investigating the weekend discovery of a dead body in western Orange County.
A man told deputies that he spotted what appeared to be a body down an embankment off Morrow Mill Road Sunday afternoon. Deputies checked the area and found a man's body in the undergrowth.
The body appeared to have been there for a few days, and there was no identification, authorities said. An autopsy determined the man died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office is conducting a homicide investigation and is checking missing persons reports to try to identify the victim. He was described as a Hispanic man, about 25 to 35 years old, 5 feet, 5 inches tall and about 145 to 160 pounds.
