You're missing a step. The pipelines have terminals where the gas is picked up by tanker trucks and hauled to the distributor's facility. Then, the distributor sells the gas to stations, etc. Distributors have allocations - right now, those allocations are very low because the pipeline is not up to full capacity yet.

If you have an area with few distributors, their allocations are being delivered to a higher number of stations, vs an area with a lot of distributors all selling to fewer stations. This is why the outages are spotty rather than evenly spread.

Hubby works for a distributor, and they are having to send trucks out to the terminal so they can get the next day's allocation right after midnight, guaranteeing they actually get that day's gas. It's a scramble right now, but should ease up soon.

I don't get this gas crunch thing. Why in some places and not others? I read a post on another website earlier today that said there were 2-3 hour waits for gas in Charlotte. If the gas is truly not making it up the pipeline to the tanks (where trucks then deliver it to the stations) would the shortage not be more widespread?
