Gas crunch hits Wake Tech schedule

e-mail print friendly

The Wake Tech volleyball team has canceled a game scheduled for Thursday evening at North Raleigh Christian Academy.

The limited availability of gas in the western part of the state made travel difficult for Wake Tech's opponent, Blue Ridge Community College, from Flat Rock.

No makeup date was set.

Why would a gas crunch in the western part of our state affect tonight's wake tech game in raleigh? it's a whole 20 miles... plenty of gas at every station I've seen over the past few days... -OBXPackMan Did you read the article? Their opponent is Blue Ridge Community College. This is in the western part of the state. That, my friend is why Wake Tech is affected, even though they are playing in Raleigh......

You're missing a step. The pipelines have terminals where the gas is picked up by tanker trucks and hauled to the distributor's facility. Then, the distributor sells the gas to stations, etc. Distributors have allocations - right now, those allocations are very low because the pipeline is not up to full capacity yet.

If you have an area with few distributors, their allocations are being delivered to a higher number of stations, vs an area with a lot of distributors all selling to fewer stations. This is why the outages are spotty rather than evenly spread.

Hubby works for a distributor, and they are having to send trucks out to the terminal so they can get the next day's allocation right after midnight, guaranteeing they actually get that day's gas. It's a scramble right now, but should ease up soon.

I don't get this gas crunch thing. Why in some places and not others? I read a post on another website earlier today that said there were 2-3 hour waits for gas in Charlotte. If the gas is truly not making it up the pipeline to the tanks (where trucks then deliver it to the stations) would the shortage not be more widespread?
