Chapel Hill, N.C. — A new survey paints an unfavorable picture of Chapel Hill's downtown Halloween bash.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce surveyed businesses directly impacted by the annual party, which attracts thousands of people and shuts down Franklin Street.
Twenty-eight percent of downtown businesses said Halloween night had a negative impact on business, compared with 24 percent who reported a boost in revenue.
Forty-five percent of those businesses reported slight damage from the revelry, while another 19 percent reported major damage to their establishments.
Other downtown events got better reviews from business owners, with only 9 percent saying those events were bad for business.
Chamber officials said they would present the findings to town leaders to see what, if any, changes need to be made for Halloween.

For me, back in the day Halloween was primarily a day for kids to have fun. Now it is a time for drunken revelry, as if these people need some excuse to get drunk. How did we ever let this change? Go look at the Halloween stores that open up this time of year, most of the junk they sell is for adults. I've never been to this one (even when I lived in Chapel Hill), but I've been to a much bigger such street "celebration" in another city. Once. A useless waste of energy.
I suggest Chapel Hill board up the businesses like for a storm and close up shop for the night.
For me, I'll carve my Jack o'Lantern and take my grandkids trick or treating ... no way it gets any better than that.
