A swimmer for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening following an afternoon workout.

Director of Athletic Communications Steve Kirshner said Allison Barnes experienced "some level of distress” while swimming. The coaches noticed something was wrong with her and called 911.

Orange County 911 dispatchers sent Chapel Hill firefighters and paramedics, telling them a woman was reported to be in cardiac arrest. They arrived quickly and transported Barnes to the nearby UNC Hospitals, school officials said.

According to the TarHeel Blue Web site, Barnes is a sophomore from Maryland.

When Swimming World magazine announced her decision in 2006 to go to UNC, it reported she attended Vestavia Hills High School and swam for the North Baltimore Aquatic Club.

Hope she is okay and WRAL keeps us updated.

If you follow the Tarheel Blue link and check the roster it says she's from C. Milton Wright High School in Bel Air, MD. Vestavia Hills High School is in Alabama.

I can't imagine what happened, I hope and pray she is okay.
