Durham keeps five-day work week

e-mail print friendly

City officials decided Thursday against shifting municipal offices to a four-day work week.

City Councilman Howard Clement proposed studying the idea to save money on gasoline. City vehicles use almost 63,000 gallons of gas and more than 39,600 gallons of diesel each month, and prices paid to fuel fleet vehicles have increased between 11 and 21 percent since last year, officials said.

Durham city staff members said Thursday that a flex-time policy already allows employees to work four days with department approval, and the city also has policies encouraging workers to cut down on personal gas use by riding the bus or sharing rides.

"I think we really have it covered on both ends, and at the end of the day, it is about how the citizens are best served," City Manager Tom Bonfield said.

Wayne County moved many employees to a four-day work week last month. Essential employees like firefighters, police and court officials still work Monday through Friday.

I would paint all city and state owned vehicles bright pink. This would make them less likely to be driven for personal business.

It would reduce the cost for employees who don't drive city owned vehicles. Reduce the cost of heating/AC if the bldg.is open 4 days instead of five. The county of Durham allows some employees to work 4 10 hour days. They usually rotate Fridays off maybe every 3rd or 4th Friday. It sames the employees money

I'd hope there are firefighters and police working at all hours, 7 days a week, not just Monday through Friday. :)

Question: How does working 40 hours over 4 days or 5 days change the amount of driving workers would do in state vehicles? Aren't these vehicles just used when they are driving around town doing whatever they do while working? I don't see how it would result in any less work or driving.

I think the point was- there had been a post/newstory a couple weeks ago about Durham looking into the idea of the four day week, and this was the follow-up to report the outcome/decision.
