Wade, N.C. — A Wade man was charged Tuesday with having sexual relations with a child, authorities said.

Patrick Erle Plunkett, 44, of 6711 Norvell Road, was charged with five counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, six counts of sexual acts by a substitute parent and three counts each of statutory sexual offense, statutory rape of a person 13, 14 or 15 years old and first-degree statutory sexual offense.

Authorities said Plunkett began his relationship with the child, who was then 11, in October 2003.

He was being held Tuesday in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $157,500 secured bond.
