Fire sprinkler extinguishes fire at retirement home

A single sprinkler head extinguished a bedroom fire in a retirement home late Wednesday night, firefighters said Thursday evening.

When Carrboro firefighters responded to the Carolina Springs Apartments on West Poplar Avenue at 11:01 p.m. Wednesday, they found heavy smoke but no fire in a second-floor apartment.

A mattress in the apartment had burned, but the fire was completely extinguished by the sprinkler system prior to firefighters arriving.

Everyone inside the building was safely evacuated.

Two residents were displaced by the fire. Damage was estimated at $45,000, slightly above initial estimates.
