Troopers, deputies find $1 million in cash after wreck

print friendly

Pitt County sheriff's deputies and state troopers recovered approximately $1 million in cash that two men were trying to bury in woods after a wreck on Sunday.

The Sheriff's Office received a call about suspicious activity behind a house off N.C. Highway 33, near the Beaufort County line, around 9 a.m. Deputies discovered a pickup truck wrecked nearby, so they called in the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Deputies went into the woods to pursue two men seen near the house and found two suitcases full of U.S. currency, said Capt. Douglas Peterson, with the Pitt County Sheriff's Office. It appeared the men had been digging by hand to bury the cash so it would not be discovered during the wreck investigation.

A member of the Highway Patrol's drug-interdiction team said the truck had been modified in ways common for vehicles used to run drugs on highways, Peterson said. A section of the truck bed had been cut out to create a hidden compartment, with a cover sealed by duct tape.

The money in the suitcases added up to $975,000. Troopers found more loose cash in the truck.

Peterson said no charges have been filed yet, but the investigation was ongoing. He expected federal agencies to be called in to assist deputies and troopers.

The authorities can seize the money and the vehicle. Then go ahead and turn the guys loose. Somebody is going to extremely P.O.'d. My bet is that THEY will be the ones buried in the woods somewhere!

what? does'nt everyone drive around with 975,000 in cash?

It never ceases to amaze me how many people there are that are intellectually challenged. All of the money found was confiscated and tested for drugs. A person responsible for selling drugs to possibly your family, friends or your whatever has been removed from circulation and hopefully will never sell drugs again. I' sure that will cause some of you heartache and will temporarily interrupt your habit. It is obvious to me that drugs are the reason some of you think the way you do. Those that question if all the money was turned in would most likely keep some for themselves if the opportunity presents itself.

"provided that you can show where you got the money legally for instance"

How gracious of the government to allow carrying cash, as long as you haff der papers, to PROVE you're innocent. (I assume "innocent until proven guilty is SOOO old fashioned )

Some of you are absolutely crazy. #1 it's not against the law to carry cash over $3000.00 (?) provided that you can show where you got the money legally for instance a w/drawal slip, #2 It's kinda obvious that it was drug money, why else would they be trying to bury it. As for you wonderful people who state the troopers took some of it....grow up and get a life. Too bad these leos have to protect your behinds.
