Falls Lake is almost 2½ feet higher than it was a year ago, while demand across the municipal water system has dropped from last year, officials said Tuesday.

The level of Falls Lake, the primary reservoir for Raleigh and six Wake County towns, was 250.9 feet Tuesday, which is 7 inches below the level at which it's considered full. A year ago, the lake was at 248.5 feet.

Meanwhile, daily water consumption averaged 53.1 million gallons over the last month, down 14 percent from the 61.9 million gallons the municipal water system was pumping daily last summer.

Falls Lake has enough water to last at least to late April 2009, based on current demand levels, officials said.

I don't know about Raleigh but according to the City of Durham web site we are still on Stage III restrictions and can only water our plants 2 days a week and can't use water for much of anything else, including washing our cars or sidewalks, filling pools, etc. But I guess we don't get our water from Falls Lake - we get it from Lake Michie which, incidentally, has also been full longer than Falls.

"So when do I get to wash my car?"

We're not supposed to wash our cars still? I washed mine this weekend at my apartment.

Ok Meeker you gonna chill out now and stop using the word "drought" since its been over since April. Mother nature takes care of herself, I never had any doubt the lake would fill up on its own. Relax Meeker. And for those of you who still think we are in drought because some stat about last years rain total is still down.......go look at the lakes.

So when do I get to wash my car? NOW what's the excuse for water restrictions? I know, I know, the water table isn't replenished. I think it's just an excuse to raise my water rates.

It's worth remembering that back in February, the feds were scaring everyone by telling us Falls Lake could be dry by now: http://triangle.johnlocke.org/blog/?p=1924
