The town has hired the former police chief of Wadesboro to take over for Police Chief Joe Privette, who retired Thursday after 28 years with the police department, including 15 years as chief.

Vance Johnson will begin his duties as Wendell police chief on Sept. 2, with a starting salary of $65,000. Sixty-seven people had applied for the chief's position.

In Wadesboro, Johnson created the position of a gang information officer and introduced criminal interdiction to the police department. The latter move resulted in seizures of more than $655,000.

Johnson previously spent 14 years with the Henderson Police Department and has taught law enforcement classes at Vance-Granville Community College.

Sgt. Bobby Langston of the Wendell Police Department will serve as interim chief until Johnson takes over.
