A Durham County man was charged with a Monday morning attack in which another man was slashed with a machete, police said.

Ashley Neal Hersey, 33, of Timberlake, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was being held in the Durham County Jail under a $500,000 bond.

Two acquaintances began arguing at about 3 a.m. inside an apartment at the Vesson Avenue Apartments complex when one man was slashed three times with a machete, police said. The assailant chased the man into the street, where he was slashed a fourth time, police said.

The unidentified victim was cut twice on the neck and twice on the head and was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment. There was no word Monday afternoon on his condition.
