Proposal to own chickens in Cary plucked

e-mail print friendly

The Town Council on Thursday rejected a proposal to allow local residents to own chickens.

The proposal would have reclassified chickens so residents would be able to have coops in their backyards. Current rules require at least an acre of property and a special permit to own chickens.

The meeting shows that this issue goes way beyond whether or not chickens would be acceptable in the town. It clearly shows that the comments made about how Cary is stuck up and elitist are reflected by the council and transitively the community that elected them. As a Cary resident, it's disgraceful how they would not even pursue facts. It's not like they were voting about whether to have chickens, the motion was to decide whether they should find out the facts and then make a decision at a later date. I worry about what other community issues the council will ignore based upon misconceptions and prejudices. Or is this really the Cary that we think of as "a world class city"?

CHICKENS IN CARY???....Only if they are Cordon Bleu with a Chardonnay

"Nearly all of us keep chickens. The next door neighbor has a rescued race horse. Further up you will find rescued donkeys as well as goats and alpacas.

Our mail boxes don't match, we don't water our lawns because we need the water for the fruit trees and veggie gardens, and everyone is happy because, well, we're too busy in our own yards to notice the neighbors' yards."

hawk_fan: Your "unzoned piece of paradise" sounds wonderful! Your neighbors must be, too, if they rescue animals. I hope that your community gets to stay that way.

Oops, meant to say Carrboro. Chapel Hill allows them, too, but it's more restricted.

"And for those who seem to actually be criticising the no chickens in Cary -- please tell me any other nearby city, town or municipality that allows this within city/town/municipality limits."
