Columbia, N.C. — The N.C. Division of Forest Resources is lifting its ban on open burning in several counties in response to recent rain in the state.
The ban on open burning for Washington, Tyrell, Beaufort and Hyde counties started on June 6 in response to conditions of a large wildfire burning in and around the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
On June 12, forestry officials added a second burning ban for Brunswick, Columbus, Bladen, Duplin, Pender and New Hanover counties because a lack of adequate rainfall and high temperatures.
The bans are canceled as of noon Saturday, a news release said.
The lifting of the ban means the Division of Forest Resources will be issuing burning permits in the affected counties again. Permits will be available at approved permitting agents. Residents can also apply online.
The wildfire is currently 75 percent contained. It has consumed 41,553 acres. On Friday firefighters reported 10 to 15 foot flame lengths.
