N.C. girl bitten by shark off Emerald Isle

Emerald Isle, N.C. — A Sneads Ferry girl was bitten by what was likely a shark in the waters off Emerald Isle on Wednesday evening.

The 14-year-old girl was bitten on the foot around 7:30 p.m., said Bill Hargett, chief of the Emerald Isle Police Department.

The girl suffered lacerations to her foot and possible ligament and tendon damage. She was taken to Cartert General Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

Hargett said doctors believe the bite was inflicted by a shark.

The girl's name has been withheld.

This sounds like a possible hate crime to me. I hope the justice dept. will be looking into it.

Two summers ago, at high tide on Carolina Beach, I saw a blacktip shark inside a cresting wave less than 10 feet from the shore, in a wave I was about to body surf. The thing nearly landed on me. Blacktips are harmless to humans, but it still scared the bejeebers out of me! Also, I shouldn't have been in the water at 7pm.

Poor thing. Hopefully she recovers quickly. Don't go in the water at normal shark feeding times- Dawn and Dusk. I have however seen sharks feeding at other times. One time at Myrtle beach we had a Sandbar shark between us and the beach- pretty scary and it was the middle of the afternoon.

I used to love to swim in the ocean. Not anymore.

I do a lot of surf fishing on the NC coast. Lots of sharks are caught surf fishing at dusk and night. Usually not tigers or bulls. I have seen spinners, blacktip, etc. You don't want to be in the water near dusk. I swim some too, but never go in after 5pm.
