N.C. girl bitten by shark off Emerald Isle

A Sneads Ferry girl was bitten by what was likely a shark in the waters off Emerald Isle on Wednesday evening.

The 14-year-old girl was bitten on the foot around 7:30 p.m., said Bill Hargett, chief of the Emerald Isle Police Department.

The girl suffered lacerations to her foot and possible ligament and tendon damage. She was taken to Cartert General Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

Hargett said doctors believe the bite was inflicted by a shark.

The girl's name has been withheld.
