State law enforcement officers handed out nearly 2,000 DWI citations statewide during a 10-day operation around the July Fourth holiday, the Governor's Office said Thursday.

During "Booze It & Loose It: Operation Firecracker," which ran June 27 to July 6, law enforcement officers issued 66,738 traffic and criminal citations and conducted 5,724 sobriety checkpoints and patrols.

Of the 1,986 citations for driving while impaired, Wake County accounted for 132, Mecklenburg County for 114, and Robeson and New Hanover counties for 61 each.

Officers arrested 534 wanted people and recovered 85 stolen vehicles.

They also cited motorists for 6,549 safety-belt and 1,075 child-passenger safety violations, 20,301 speeding violations and 1,256 drug offenses.

WOW!! JUST THINK OF ALLLLL THE $$$ THE CITY/COUNTY IS GOING TO MAKE OFF OF THESE HORRIBLE DRUNK DRIVERS!!

having a few beers along with a meal is not above the limit

"I wonder how many of these arrests were for people seriously drunk/impaired or just folks who had a few beers at a cookout. The limits are so low and penalties so draconian, that it doesn't make sense drink n drive over the holidays. "

Absolutely correct. ON the one hand you have people that continually push for tougher laws, and its already tough. They want to make someone at the low end of the legal limit(.08) a felon and face capital punishment. ON the other hand, you have stores selling it on every corner, and the state running the liquor stores and making a profit. Crucifying someone who had a couple of beers at a picnic is not solving the drunk driving problem.

Someone needs to realize that the repeat offenders usually have a real illness and need help, and its not necessarily a moral flaw. These people need help, and forcing AA and stupid mental health programs down their throat isn't going to help them. They aren't going to get help until they are ready.

"I wonder how many of these arrests were for people seriously drunk/impaired or just folks who had a few beers at a cookout."

Doesn't matter, cause even a few beers have caused deaths.

The courts will certainly be busy. Praying they remember where the book is so they can toss it at these folks.

And praying these folks all get the message loud and clear.

God bless.

OUTSTANDING ! If only there was money to have these checkpoints in operation everynight, think how much safer it would be on the rode, lives saved, and for those who thought it was cool to drink and drive, GROW UP, or better yet go to your local Highway partol office, ask to watch all the DUI films, look at the pictures, have some EMT's show you how they insert a tube through the side of your lungs (with no pain medication) to drain the fluid. All the result of someone who was drinking, then choose to drive. I mean really, GROW UP. If your going to drink, let someone else, who isn't drinking booze, be the driver, its not rocket science. And if there isn't someone else, call a taxi. If you can't afford a taxi, stay home.
