The highway patrol was investigating a wreck Monday night near Fuquay-Varina involving a golf cart. Troopers say the golf cart didn't have any lights on.

The wreck happened on 42 East near Fleming Road.

Mikkel McKinnie, 20, told authorities he didn't see the golf cart and ran into the back of it with his Buick.

The golf cart went down a ditch and overturned. Both the golf cart’s driver, Vann Goodwin, and the 10-year-old passenger, Joshua Mannard, were ejected.

Goodwin was transported to WakeMed where he later died. Mannard was expected to be OK.

McKinnie was charged with provisional DWI since he is under 21 and had alcohol in his system. He is not expected to face any charges in relation to the wreck.

Regardless, the driver was drunk and killed someone as a result. Provisional or not, he shouldn't have been on the road. This being so, he should be charged with felony death by motor vehicle. Both Justin Crouse and Brian Anthony Reid have been charged. What makes Mikkel McKinnie exempt from the law? Does it really matter the victim was driving a golf cart? Mr. McKinnie SHOULDN'T have been on the road, PERIOD!

ATV's and golf carts are not designed for road use...end of story.

Very well put rstan,

"Bad things happen to good people. Sometimes good people ask, unknowingly at the time, for bad things to happen. If life only had a rewind button, I'd bet both would likely never do either again."

Even good people can do dumb things then we have to live with the consequences the rest of our lives. It can happen to anyone anytime we're be hind the wheel. We could be one under inflated tire, one moment of inattentiveness, or anything away from causing an accident. Thanks rstan.

Vann was my second cousin. He died. The little boy is fine. Don't judge when you don't have the whole story.

We don't know if the driver was inattentive or if alcohol had a thing to do with it, but we know the lights not being on the cart is a wrong, and the cart on the highway was wrong. Lots wrong with slow moving carts on the highway with fast moving heavy cars and drivers who shouldn't be drinking at all and driving.
