Roanoke Rapids May Remove Randy Parton's Name From Theater

The North Carolina Institute for Constitutional Law said it would file a lawsuit Thursday against the music theater that country music singer Randy Parton used to run for the city.

There is a long list of defendants, including Parton and his company, Moonlight Bandit Productions; the Northeast Partnership and the North Carolina Northeast Regional Economic Development Commission.

An institute representative said the defendants "lured Roanoke Rapids into financing the theater deal."

The city is not going to be named in this lawsuit.

In December, Roanoke Rapids officials cut ties with Parton, who was brought in to jump-start the operation that was meant to boost the city's struggling economy.

The city stripped Parton of his management duties and slashed his salary after the theater failed to meet projected revenue and attendance numbers. Accusations that he misused funds and came to work intoxicated before a show led the city to cut ties with him.

Looks like we will end up paying for it through the increased tax, which will increase to 6 cents. It started 3 cents, and then went to 5 cents, and now they are trying to get it to 6 cents. By the way people do come to Roanoke Rapids area and not just bypassing it on I-95. We do have the Roanoke Canal Trail, Lake Gaston, Roanoke River, good school systems, plenty of eating places, and the fact it’s a great place to raise children. Again we didn’t ask for any of this. It was put fourth to us as an opportunity for RR to grow and develop some economic tourism and more. I blame out city officials for this big black hole.

As a proud born and raised Roanoke Rapids citizen stop cracking down on the city of Roanoke Rapids. We did not ask for any of this!!! I just live here and try to make a living! How many of the RR city meetings where a closed session to the public? Right many of them were. Let’s point the finger where it belongs. Let’s see first and for most Mayor D.N. Beale who publicly announced this was a mistake for the city to get involved in. He is basically saying he got us into this black hole and he can’t get us out. Along with the City Manager Rick Benton, Council members Jon Baker, Carl Ferebee, Ed Deese, Ernest Bobbit, and new comer Ed Liverman. Better yet if you go to RRdailyherald.com and do archive searches about the theatre and Mayor Bill you will read some interesting news concerning the issue the citizens of RR have to deal with. You can get more information on this black hole situation that out city representatives have buried us RR citizens in. Looks like we will end up p

"I don't care what you turn it into. Nobody's driving to Roanoke Rapids for anything. What the.... is that tumbleweed crossing the street?"

Thousands drive by it every day. The idea was similar to the Rudy Theater in Selma. Put on a good show and book those bus tours that travel up and down I-95 to come see the show while they stop overnight.

The theater in Roanoke Rapids is very nice and highly visible to thousands of travelers. Their are a couple of hotel chains that jumped out there early and have building near completion. The project is in the early stages of Phase I and all the City cares about is getting its money back through the court system. That's just stupid. Put that energy into completing the project. Keep the process moving foward and the project may actually prove a success. Or, sue everybody involved, create tension and bad blood, and watch the project die a slow and painful death.

Just what are they sueing for?????

I bet if they sold lottery tickets inside the theater, they'd have lines around the block
