Group to certify water-saving car washes

The North Carolina Professional Carwash Association has launched a program to certify car washes around the state that conserve water.

The certification program requires participating car washes to reduce fresh water use by 20 percent per vehicle to come in line with state regulations regarding car wash operations during periods of exceptional drought on a year-round basis.

Testing to earn certification must be performed by a licensed plumber, officials said.

"This association is proud of the conservation efforts of its members and will continue its efforts to protect our water resources and the environment," association President Dale Reynolds. "We encourage all citizens and businesses to use water wisely and to save water while protecting the environment by using a professional car wash."
