print friendly

A 9-year-old girl died after being submerged in Kerr Lake for 12 to 14 minutes on Sunday night, authorities said.

Rescuers pulled the girl out of the water near Hibernia Road shortly before 8 p.m. The girl was unresponsive but started breathing again after medical workers performed CPR, according to the Vance County Sheriff's Office.

A helicopter from UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill was initially called out for the girl, but she was transported by ambulance to the Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

The girl died at the hospital, a supervisor said.

The girl and her family had been staying at a campsite at Kerr Lake, deputies said.

I was there and I helped in the efforts to save this beautiful child's life....Thanks to Townsville VFD, Vance Co. Rescue, and Vance Co. Fire/EMS...God bless and be with all of my fellow rescuers....We Did All We Could, now she is with her holy father on father's day.

Prayers sent.

Everyone needs to use the "buddy-system" when swimming. All Camps have these lakes that kids and counselors swim in they have measures in place. Plus too many lakes are unknown and not a good idea to go diving into them. Plus if you swim in a Lake, I also suggest you consider a life vest to wear as well. People are so clue-less to water safety.

As for Rev RB....Stop praying and start showing some action....

BTW - Kerr Lake is filthy.

God bless.

Rev. RB

Good, then stay away from around here then.

Ill be praying for the family tonight. All lakes have holes, the holes are caused by rotten tree stumps that leave a void and it becomes dangerous.

anne 53 - PFD's [personal flotation devices] should be used and you are EXACTLY right. It is a law in NC when you are in a boat for 13 and younger..... If I am running my boat from fishing spot to another I always wear a vest if my boat is underpower.... It is a law in Alabama, I think Ga. has the same law. NO matter your age -

I think the worst thing is the lack of adult supervision, but you are right again - I grew up swimming in ponds and lakes - and if someone dives under the water - they vanish until they resurface.....
