Special Olympics athletes treated for heat exhaustion

About 30 athletes at Friday night’s Special Olympics Summer Games opening ceremony were treated for heat exhaustion.

Emergency workers at Dorton Arena treated the athletes with water and ice bags to cool them. One of the torch runners also was transported to Wake Med for treatment of dehydration.

The opening ceremony was being held at Dorton Arena, which is not air-conditioned.

Special Olympics North Carolina officials said they will be changing the competition schedule due to the excessive heat. Softball games scheduled at Buffaloe Road Park and Lyons Park have been canceled.

Track and field events at the Ravenscroft school also were canceled. Indoor events at Ravenscroft will go on as planned.
