Raleigh, N.C. — An audit of the state Turnpike Authority released Friday says changed is needed.
The state auditor’s office found problems with end-of-year financial reports for the agency that oversees the creation of toll roads in the state.
Among the problems found were $1.7 million in unrecorded liabilities by the department. The authority did not indentify all outstanding obligations at year-end, according to the audit.
The audit also found the group did not reclassify all current year project expenditures to construction in progress.
The state auditor’s office recommended a greater emphasis be placed on year-end financial reporting.
The Turnpike Authority has agreed to put more emphasis on its financial reports.

Open it up to private ownership, at least then there might be shareholders to be accountable to. Most corporations are more responsive to shareholders than government to its citizens.
