Sanford, N.C. — A husband and wife have been charged with taking more than $200,000 from their homeowners association, police said Thursday.

Edward Demond Fowler, 70, of 296 Fairway Lane, was charged with embezzlement, and Helen Kathryn Fowler, 60, of the same address, was charged with aiding and abetting embezzlement.

The couple is accused of stealing about $220,000 from the North Shore Property Owners Association, which represents owners in part of the gated Carolina Trace community in Sanford.

Edward Fowler was the association's treasurer.

Police said Edward Fowler was arrested in New Hampshire, and remains in jail there awaiting extradition. Helen Fowler was released on a $2,500 bond, police said.

alphabaker - My title to two HOA homes is not encumbered by the HOA. I am not sure what you mean. You can live in your neighborhood with the family that does not cut their lawn, that paint there house objectionable colors, that have numerous cars in the front yard (some of which are non-functional), etc.

I think I had an encounter with this couple in Cary about 4 years ago. If it's the same couple and they look familiar especially him, they are total lowlife's! He's kind of dirty and unkempt and very aggressive and intimidating. She just sits back and glares at you. They were attempting a theft through trickery and deceit at the time...if it's the same couple.

This is the reason there are checks and balances on HOA's. The other officers of the association should have kept an eye on the books on a regular basis. Residence are legally entitled to view HOA financial documents to assure their fees aren't being diverted to non-HOA purposes.

just another reason why I would never live in a 'HOA' period...I like the title to my house free and clear and not encumbered with rules and fees that never go down but up and up ! plus in this case if no one is watching the cash register the thiefs have a field day !
