Raleigh expands watering schedule

Customers on the municipal water system can begin using sprinklers twice a week, the City Council said Tuesday.

After months of tight water restrictions, Raleigh relaxed its rules last month to allow outdoor irrigation one day a week and the use of a hand-held hose to water on a second day.

Continued rains in recent weeks persuaded city officials to ease restrictions even more, allowing people to water twice a week with automatic systems and sprinklers. People with odd-number addresses can water Tuesdays and Saturdays, while those with even-number addresses can water Wednesdays and Sundays.

Under the new rules, water customers can use a hand-held hose any day.

The Raleigh system supplies water to customers in the city and in Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon.

Time for the conservative-minded garden designer to voice in:

This ain't about water, this is about King Meeker and his supposed kingdom. Our CURRENT, average(!) rainfall is more than sufficient to water lawns, flowers, and the sacred Southern vegetable garden. Just in case, we pay to water in between the odd occasion where rain won't fall for a few days. NOW(!), we've got to pay more in their new budget.....'cause we're not usin' enough water!!! I'm a little busy with my small business, but if someone'll pay for my family to move back into Raleigh so I can run for mayor and lead the greatest city in the U.S. better than a marginal lawyer and his liberal, magic-eight ball-directed agenda, I'm listenin'...............

No lawn watering for me this year. I don't want to pay $$ for the water use. We should be able to wash our cars any day if we are allowed to use a hand held hose. The water is only used to rinse off the soap.

You know why we are still allowed to wash out cars only on Sat. and Sunday. Meeker is watching out for the car washing business. Sometimes I think he has his hands in their pockets. It's so crazy I believe it really needs to be investigated. Wouldn't be the first politician in this area that is dirty.

We use less water to wash our own cars than a car wash does. The rule to allow us only the weekends is flat out wrong!

Lawns don't need to be watered right after a good soaking via a rain storm. I too cannot understand why people turn the sprinklers on the day after we receive 1/2" of rain. Makes no sense whatsoever.

City now is allowing people to water the grass any day of the week using a hose, but we still cant wash our cars until the weekend! Thats not right!

Step in the right direction!
