Police car strikes suspect during chase

A police cruiser hit a man who had fled on foot after a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Anthony Deangelo Gooch, 21, of Wadesboro Street, ran after a car he was driving was pulled over at N.C. Highway 98 and Lynn Road for a seat-belt violation, police said. He was wanted on outstanding warrants charging him with failure to appear in court, police said.

A chase on foot led to the 3000 block of Wedgedale Avenue, where Gooch was hit by Officer D.P. Sexton's patrol car, police said. Sexton was responding to a call for assistance in the chase, they said.

A preliminary investigation showed Gooch stumbled as he ran into the street and fell into the path of Sexton's patrol car, police said. Witnesses told police Sexton swerved to avoid the collision, but Gooch’s head struck the right front corner of the patrol car.

Gooch suffered minor injuries and was treated at Duke University Hospital, police said.
