Oil spill threatens bird sanctuary

Oil leaking from two tankers has flowed into the Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park, authorities said Monday.

Workers at the bird sanctuary noticed oil in wetlands on the property Monday morning and traced the problem to two tankers parked at an old lumber yard nearby, authorities said.

Halifax County deputies have interviewed two people in connection with the spill, but no charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon.

No animals have been killed by the spill, but authorities said a few birds and turtles were covered in oil. Sylvan Heights officials also said oil in the wetlands could adversely affect the educational programs they conduct.
