Wake Technical Community College athletic teams will be known as the Eagles, officials announced Tuesday.

The selection of a college nickname came after more than 1,700 votes were cast online in a weeklong election that ended last Friday.

Eagles was one of six nicknames competing in the final vote after students and faculty submitted almost 500 suggestions in recent weeks. The other finalists were Wildcats, Warriors, Wings, Sparks and Ventures.

Wake Tech's Student Government Association adopted the eagle as the school's mascot several years ago, but college officials wanted to ensure everyone on campus had a say in choosing the athletic teams' nickname.

The athletics program begins this fall with men's soccer, women's volleyball and men's and women's golf. Basketball will be added in the 2009-10 school year, followed by baseball and softball a year later.

It would be great if people did a little research before they posted comments about how this will cause "very high student activity fees" at community colleges. Community colleges often contract out with facilities now for PE classes and sport programs- they don't build dozens of basketball courts and maintain large aqua-centers for thousands of undergraduates. Adding sports will be a lean operation, compared to the upkeep and facility costs of new buildings. Community colleges struggle with building identity, since the population is a commuter one. Not only will the expense not be large, but it will add much to the school to allow students to cheer for their teams. Many community colleges already have basketball and volleyball teams around the state; some play the JV programs at 4 year schools. Before people knock community colleges, they should look into them a little more...

Community Colleges have very low tuition, but they will come to have very HIGH STUDENT ACTIVITY FEES....keep the sports out of community college.

Name three most learned professors at DUKE, UNC, or NCSU.

Name the 3 best basketball players...

Name the highest paid staff at Carolina or Duke. What do they teach?

See, see what the emphasis is on at colleges...not learning, not teaching -- for where you put your riches, there is your heart, and sports don't even matter in reality.

I just wish instead of football and basketball, the universities had competing CIRCUS ACTS.

Isn't the NCCU mascot an eagle?

Commentor5 - Why are you offended by an Eagle mascot?

They do need to come up with something more original than the Eagles - Enloe is the only Eagles I know!! :-) Enloe Eagles sound so much better than the Wake Tech Eagles!
