Highway Patrol Changes How Assignments Are Handled

e-mail print friendly

Starting in the fall of 2008, potential North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers will find out where they will work before attending training.

Highway Patrol Commander Col. W. Fletcher Clay expects that information to help in recruiting. “Hopefully this will attract applicants that were hesitant about applying because of the uncertainty of their duty station assignment,” he said.

In the past cadets didn't get their assignment until just before graduation.

Basic training for the highway patrol will begin Oct. 1 for existing North Carolina law enforcement officers and Nov. 12 for others.

Great move on the SHP's part..

I have several close friends in the SHP and they all went through the fear of "not knowing". You can tell who has NEVER had to uproot their family and put their kids in another school system all because their company "needed" them at another location. This move has kind of been the "unwritten" rule for the past few years, because finding Qualified Troopers that were willing to risk being moved to the other side of the state has really dropped off. In most cases one could get the assignment that they wanted, now it is just official that they will find out and have it official BEFORE they attend 6-7 months of training.

They should be sent where the state needs them.

Excellent idea. Just like the military, you should have a little to say in where you go. I think this will improve the stock of candidates
