Raleigh, N.C. — State troopers are targeting aggressive drivers this Easter weekend, state Highway Commander Col. W. Fletcher Clay said.

Troopers increased patrols on interstates and other heavily-traveled corridors. They looked for flagrant violations, such as excessive speeding, following too closely and erratic lane changes.

"Whether you're headed to the beach, visiting friends or going to church, please drive with care," Clay said. "Our troopers will be looking for aggressive drivers, drunk drivers and drivers not wearing their seat belts while patrolling this Easter weekend."

Convictions for following another car too closely can result in a $145 fine and four points on your driving record, troopers warned.

Troopers will also be stepping up enforcement of anti-litter laws.

The patrol's efforts are part of the nationwide Combined Accident Reduction Effort, in which troopers and police increase their visibility over holidays to prevent crashes.

In 2007, eight people died in 1,153 wrecks statewide during the Easter holiday period.

Most can report crashes, drunk drivers, stranded drivers and other situations to the Highway Patrol by dialing *HP (*47) toll-free on their cell phones.
