Raleigh, N.C. — A gushing water-main break slowed traffic at Western Boulevard and Avent Ferry Road in Raleigh late Thursday.

The break occurred around 9:45 p.m., and water shot dozens of feet into the air from a manhole on Western Boulevard, according to a WRAL photographer on the scene.

Andy Brogden, Raleigh's water-distribution superintendent, estimated that water poured out of the rupture at a rate of 100 gallons per minute.

Utility crews capped the break around 11 p.m., and no customers were affected at that point.

Brogden said it was likely that either a pipe had burst or an air release valve had failed. Crews were working to shut off the water to determine the exact cause of the break.

Didn't this same line break a couple months ago? I remember one breaking at Western and Avent Ferry.

I agree with TechRescue. Having been a firefighter and seeing that water main break in person..If that water flow rate was 100 gpm then I am 12 feet tall. The city has no control over these water main breaks and we are paying the price of them. I have had two withing 8 days of one another on my street. The second one being mere feet from the first one. All the "necessary changes" Mayor Meeker has made with regards to water usage, control, rate increases and otherwise is far to little far too late. Any money saved or raised at this point is fruitless. Get out your checkbooks residents of Raleigh. It's going to get worse.

100 gallons/minute? Let's see... a 2" smoothbore nozzle flowing at 50psi tip pressure is rated at 840 gallons per minute, or so the TaskForceTip test charts indicate. Anybody want to place a wager on 100gpm?
