Greenville, S.C. — Dozens of students and adult chaperones were on a Delta Air Lines flight from Raleigh that made an emergency landing in South Carolina Wednesday night, officials said.
Delta Flight 1819 was flying from Raleigh to Atlanta when the pilot smelled smoke in the cockpit and made an emergency landing at Greenville-Spartanburg Airport, officials said.
Fifty-one students from Southern Wayne High School and Charles B. Aycock High School headed to a spring break trip to Italy, along with 29 chaperones, were among the 259 passengers on the flight, said Ken Dirkson, spokesman for Wayne County Schools.
The students and chaperones were taken by bus to Atlanta Wednesday night and were divided into four groups for flights to Milan, Italy, on Thursday, Dirkson said. All were expected to arrive within 15 minutes of each other, he said.
