Raleigh, N.C. — Health officials said Tuesday that several people have begun getting rabies-prevention shots because they came in contact this month with a cat that has been confirmed to have the disease.
The cat lived at the beginning of March at a home on Howson Road near Fuquay-Varina and then at one on Sandy Pine Drive in Youngsville.
The people getting the shots live in Wake and Franklin counties, the Wake County health department said.
"We believe we have contacted every resident who came in contact with this particular animal, but anyone who has been scratched or bitten by an animal they do not know should always call our clinic," said Gibbie Harris, Wake County community health director. "Our nurses will be able to assess if they need to seek medical treatment."
