Fewer trains ran off the tracks in North Carolina in 2007. It was the safest year on record for freight railroads, according to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

The state saw five fewer accidents and derailments over the 31 recorded in 2006, the report said.

Nationwide, railroad accidents dropped by 13.7 percent, from 2,963 to 2,557. The FRA also reported a decrease in train-car collisions.
