Controlled Burn Near Jordan Lake Scrambles Durham Firefighters

e-mail print friendly

A controlled burn of land in northern Chatham County sent firefighters scrambling in Durham on Thursday.

Smoke drifting north from the fire, which was possible because the state's lifted a burn ban following recent rainfall, prompted calls to Durham 911 about a possible blaze on the south side of the county.

The Durham County fire marshal's office said there was no cause for alarm, but firefighters were sent on at least one call before officials determined what was happening.

Durham officials said they believed the burn covered about 150 acres. Chatham officials were not immediately available.

It's a Forest Management technique to keep undergrowth controlled and to allow healthy timber to grow. These controlled burns do no harm but rather help our forest thrive.

i can't imagine how the slaughering of trees out there and now 150 acres of burnt land is going to help. sometimes i think homesites would be better.
