Female Inmate Found Dead

The North Carolina Dept. of Corrections announced the death of inmate Amber Gilley Thursday.

Gilley, 31, was found hanging in a shower Tuesday evening, the victim of an apparent suicide.

Gilley was serving a six-to-eight month sentence for drug possession with intent to sell. She also had misdemeanor convictions for driving while impaired and injury to personal property. All convictions were in Surry County.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Department investigating her death.

churchgirl2, you are so very right. Alot of people in jail are very sick {mentally} indeed. This leads to self-medicating and thus jail. We have a system that is not working.

You should se what goes on behind those prison walls, things you cant live with, for some people especially if your the victum.

C'mon JAT, you have to know what I am saying. She obviously needed help and didn't get it...she got (depressing) jail instead and then, yes, she decided to end her life. It's tragic and, I think, avoidable.

This story does seem odd, 6-8 months would have rolled around in no time. She may have had the chance to be released early for good behavior however, that's easier said than done.

NWD - of course you can have both, but having one doesn't mean you have a built-in excuse to break the law.

fl - no, she got a 6-8 month sentence for petty crimes. SHE chose to kill herself. No one else but her.
