Halifax County Sheriff's deputies arrested an Enfield man on kidnapping, rape and assault charges Tuesday after a brief standoff.

A woman claimed that Desmond Brown had held her against her will. On Monday, when police arrived at the scene of the alleged crimes, Brown fled on foot. The frightened woman, upon seeing the police, ran out of the house to tell her tale.

Brown was not found at that time, but a rifle was recovered from his house.

On Tuesday, deputies returned to the property. Brown again fled from them. Cornered, he barricaded himself in a bedroom and threatened them with a gun. After a brief standoff, Brown surrendered to police.

Desmind Brown, 36, is charged with:

  • resisting and delaying arrest
  • first degree rape
  • first degree kidnapping
  • first degree sexual offense
  • two counts of assault by pointing a gun
  • four counts of assault on a female
  • five counts of communicating threats, and
  • four counts of assault by strangulation.

He is being held in the Halifax County Jail under a $ 101,750 bond and has a April 16 court date.
